A Job Done Well

For managers caught in the middle of large organisations.

We believe most organisations aren’t broken because people are incompetent—they’re broken because the system gets in the way of doing a good job.

A Job Done Well Podcast

Why this podcast exists

Jimmy Barber and James Lawther have spent 70+ years working across corporate Britain, from shop floors to senior leadership. They’ve packed frozen peas, run multi-million-pound operations, and seen first-hand how often organisations make simple things complicated.

Somewhere along the way, “doing a good job” got replaced with performance, theatre, and well-meaning nonsense.
We think it’s worth sticking to the job in hand.

What we want

You spend a lot of time at work. We want you to enjoy it. We want to see your business run so smoothly that you delight your customers, employees, shareholders, and your regulator.

We want you to take pride in a Job Done Well! Your boss might even thank you for it.

The sweet spot

At the heart of it is something simple: The best organisations deliver exactly what their customers expect—nothing more, nothing less—consistently.

Not over-engineered. Not stripped to the bone. Just right.

We call that the sweet spot.

The cheeseless pizza problem

It’s easy to cut costs by quietly making things worse—longer wait times, less capable teams, weaker systems.

Bit by bit, the quality disappears.

Like taking the cheese off a pizza and hoping no one notices.

They always do.

Why “more” isn’t the answer either

Overcompensating doesn’t work either. Customers don’t want unexpected surprises—they want reliability. A Job Done Well is exactly what was expected, done properly and delivered on time.

That’s what builds trust. And it’s usually cheaper too.

What you’ll get from us

This isn’t theory or management jargon. Each week, we break down real situations inside organisations:

  • Where things go wrong
  • What actually fixes them
  • How to navigate it when you’re the one stuck in the middle

Practical ideas. Honest conversations. A bit of dry humour.

The virtuous circle (when it works)

When you focus on doing the job properly amazing things happen:

  • Work flows faster
  • Quality improves
  • Customers are happier
  • Teams are more engaged
  • Costs come down, not through cost-cutting, but through doing things right.

What we’re not

We’re not consultants selling frameworks, away days, or the latest management trend.
We won’t build dependency or dress simple ideas up to sound clever.
We’re here to help you do a good job—in a world that often makes that harder than it should be.
